Introduction

This product has been created by the ICT Division of the Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses, whose system of IT management complies with the requirements of the ČSN EN ISO 9001:2009, ČSN ISO/IEC 20000-1:2006 and ČSN ISO/IEC 27001:2006 standards and has been certified by an independent organization CERTLINE.
This website is administered and updated by the Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses (IBA) at the Masaryk University, with the objective to provide information on creation and administration of clinical registries maintained at this academic institute. The aim of the www.registry.cz portal is to provide methodical guidelines to subjects interested in clinical registry establishment and administration.
You can find here an overview of all registry projects at IBA, as well as general information and advice on the establishment and administration of clinical registries (registry design, legal aspects, safety requirements etc.).
Your comments and suggestions on the improvement of this website are very welcome.
What are clinical registries?
Clinical registries are databases or collections of records on persons which suffer from a certain disease, from a congenital disorder, or are under medical supervision for another reason. In this way, physicians can collect data on patients with a certain type of cancer, with haemophilia etc. The registry involves various data such as age, gender, patient’s history, type of disease or disorder, its importance, type of treatment and its extent, and possible complications. These data are usually stored in an electronic database which meets high security standards.
What are benefits of clinical registries?
Clinical registries bring a number of advantages to involved patients and physicians, and even to researchers, who strive to find a more effective therapeutic strategy, for example.
- Patients. Clinical registries inform the public about the incidence of a given disease, describe the needs of patients, discover imperfections in the health care system, predict future needs, and provide informational support to public health care facilities and physicians, who can subsequently act in favour of a given group of patients.
- Physicians. The physicians get a better overview of their patients and receive regular reports on the number of patients involved in the entire project. After an overall assessment of nationwide data, the physicians receive statistically relevant information, e.g. on the efficiency of a given therapeutic approach, on the epidemiology of a given disease etc. Moreover, the registry can promote a more effective exchange of information and experience between physicians.
Clinical registries at the Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses
The Institute of Biostatistics and Analyses (IBA) is member of national and international organizations focused on specific types of diseases and on the search of new therapy approaches. IBA plays a significant role in the establishment, management and analysis of Czech and Central European clinical registries, as it is able to provide a complex background necessary for these types of projects: IBA uses the latest technology, emphasizes data security, helps to solve legal issues, and provides data management as well as final data analysis. IBA currently runs dozens of clinical registries; you can find their overview and more detailed annotations on these webpages.
